Ray-protection glazing comprises of float glass in which lead oxide (PbO) has been
added to the mix of standard ingredients during its manufacturing. Lead oxide exhibits
the ability to absorb ionizing radiation (x-rays, γ-rays, etc.), which are particularly
harmful to humans.
This type of glazing is intended solely for interior use in areas with controlled levels
of humidity and temperature, where either scattered or direct ionizing radiation is
present. The effectiveness in absorbing ionizing radiation is denoted with the Lead
Equivalent value. It’s the width of a sheet of lead that exhibits the same performance
as the glass being rated. Ray-protection glazing of 3,5mm-22mm is equivalent to a
lead sheet of 1,2mm-6,1mm width. This type of glazing is not held in stock, therefore
pre-ordering is necessary.
